Gum Disease

What you need to know!

What is gum disease?

Gum disease In its early stage is called gingivitis.

Gum disease is a condition in which gums become inflamed. The gums are swollen and red. When brushing or flossing the gums will bleed.

Healthy gums should look pink and firm not red and swollen.

Left untreated gingivitis becomes a condition called periodontitis. This is when the tissues and bones that surround the teeth are affected.

Symptoms of Periodontal disease:

•loose teeth

•bad breath

•an unpleasant taste in your mouth

•receding gums exposing the roots of the teeth

•gum abscesses may appear (pockets of pus under your teeth and gums)

What causes gum disease?

Gum disease is caused by a buildup of plaque in the teeth.

Plaque is a sticky substance containing bacteria. If this plaque is not removed, it builds up and becomes tartar which can cause gum irritation, redness and swelling. tartar can only be removed by your hygienist.

What can you do to prevent gum disease?

•practice proper oral hygiene at home, brush at least twice a day and floss at least once per day

•don’t smoke

•see your dentist and hygienist regularly

•your hygienist can remove any tartar from your teeth

If you have symptoms of gum disease you must visit your dentist as soon as possible.

Your dentist may refer you to a Periodontist. A Periodontist is a dentist that specializes in conditions that affect the structures of the teeth as well as the supporting tissues and diseases and conditions that affect the gums.

Your best defense against gum disease is to visit your dentist and hygienist regularly.
